A practical framework for inclusive business advice

Six design principles for advisory services that work for founders who are new to a country, its language and its institutions.

Most business advice assumes a shared starting point. This framework is written for the advisors, programs and agencies who want to serve founders who don’t share it.

The six principles

  1. Start from the journey, not the program catalogue.
  2. Make language a design choice, not an afterthought.
  3. Name the unwritten rules — the norms locals never think to explain.
  4. Work through trusted intermediaries such as community and diaspora groups.
  5. Recognize prior experience, including businesses run in another country.
  6. Follow up: most problems appear after registration, not before.

Each principle comes with practical questions a service can ask of itself, and examples of what changes in practice.
