Mixed embeddedness, revisited: a review of two decades of research
A structured review of how the mixed-embeddedness framework has been applied, extended and challenged since the early 2000s — and what it still misses.
Mixed embeddedness — the idea that immigrant entrepreneurship is shaped both by founders’ social networks and by the economic and institutional context around them — has become one of the field’s most widely used lenses.
Scope
This review brings together studies that use the framework explicitly, grouping them by the part of the opportunity structure they examine: markets, regulation, and the institutions that sit between the two.
What it adds
Beyond a map of the literature, the review sets out open questions for the next decade of work, including digital platforms, transnational firms and the role of support organizations themselves.
The foundational texts it builds on are in the Library.
